It takes a special person to fill the boots of a volunteer firefighter
Did you know that nearly 80% of America’s fire service is volunteer? Being a volunteer firefighter takes a person with a desire to do something good for the community - a person with courage and dedication. It takes a person who isn’t afraid of hard work and who is willing to accept a challenge.
If you are this kind of person, you’re needed as a volunteer firefighter. We might be able to fit you with a pair of these boots.

The Newark Fire Department is currently seeking new members.
To join the Newark Fire Department you must:
- Live or Work in the District
|
- Be a member of one of the four Companies
|
- Be at least 18 years of age
|
- Be of good moral character
|
- Pass a background check & physical exam
|
New members are on probation according to the bylaws of each individual company from the date of joining and are also placed in "recruit status" until they complete the necessary training to certify them as interior firefighters.
As a new member you will be required to take the following training :
(Courses are offered at various locations and there is no cost to the firefighter.)
- Firefighter Class (Essentials)

All active or current members are required to maintain the following attendance minimums
Required by the bylaws of each Company:
- % of ALL General (Box) Alarms
|
- % of ALL Meetings & Drills
|
- Rescue Truck Drills each year
|
- Any mandatory training (deemed by the fire department)
|
Attendance requirements are reviewed every year by each company
